Protecting yourself is imperative. And while there are technologies that can perform diverse functions, there are smartphone applications that you can employ to protect yourself – and you should use them.

Circle of 6

This smartphone app is one of the best apps any woman – and man – can have on their phones. The user design and user experience are pat-down simple. With just two touches, you can send out an SOS to your circle.

It helps college students and young girls connect to a small group of people – 6 at most. In the face of danger, you can send a pre-determined text to 6 people all at once. It is straightforward to reach your circle with the app, letting them know that you need help. For instance, you might ask them to give you a call to get you out of a situation you find uncomfortable. You can also ask your friends for help on any issue, for instance, if you lost your way and need help getting home.

The original idea behind bSafe was initially developed by Silje Vallestad, a mom, to keep her kids safe. She initially created a safety alarm for kids called BipperKids after she won money from a business plan competition she entered into. Eventually, she developed bSafe after she found that more women needed the application to keep safe.

bSafe is a safety alarm that sends an emergency message to your chosen contacts with the push of a single button. With the free version of the app, you can designate an unlimited number of “Guardians” who can respond to your SOS text message. You can also designate one “Guardian” who will receive a phone call from you. The paid version, on the other hand, provides the following:

  • up to three or more Guardians who can be called simultaneously
  • a Risk Mode that monitors you via real-time GPS tracking of your position
  • a Timer Mode with automatic alarm activation notifying your guardians

A link to a map showing your location via GPS is sent by text to your designated guardians. If you feel unsafe, too, you can program a fake incoming call to thwart any sign or intention of danger.

Watch Over Me

Watch Over Me is another essential smartphone app that can help protect you from abuse. You can send texts and emails to your emergency contacts, GPS-track your position, and even report a crime. Just as the name suggests, you can program the phone to “watch over you” for a pre-designated amount of time or until you reach your destination.

If you find yourself in danger, the app allows you to shake your phone, which triggers an emergency alert and records the situation. If you fail to check-in at a designated time, your emergency contacts will receive an alarm. The app can also notify you when you are in an unsafe region.

Just like Circle of 6, Guardly was made for college students and corporate office security. With this smartphone app, you can send emergency alerts to pre-selected loved ones. It also has a personal alarm function and a 911 quick-call feature. You can also enable GPS and Bluetooth tracking of your location, so that loved ones, security, or the police can locate you anywhere.

SmartSafe+ is basically a smartphone app was designed for people going through family violence to collect evidence. This safe and highly interactive app can safely collect and store evidence.

If you ever find yourself in danger and need to consult a lawyer on what steps to take, and you don’t know where to start your search from, do a Google search of “best attorneys near me”. You can then filter and seek legal advice.
